You will certainly want to
eat out sometimes and there are some excellent restaurants within a
short driving distance. Kiluaea Lodge Restaurant is for that
very special romantic dining experience. The gourmet cuisine, the
ambiance and service are all
excellent. We suggest calling to make a reservation (967-7366). The
restaurant is open every evening at 5:30 p.m. for dinner. Ask for a
table next to the Fireplace of Friendship, very romantic! If you'd like,
you can drop by and look at the menu first. It's pricey, but well worth
it. Maybe this is your one big splurge.
There is also a fine Thai restaurant in the same building as the hardware store on Old Volcano Road. Well prepared, authentic Thai cuisine at a reasonable cost. Again, check out the menu. You'll be impressed. We highly recommend the Lava Rock Cafe, just behind the 'lower store' on Old Volcano Road, just west of Kiluaea Lodge. Great for breakfast, good service, good prices. Also open for lunch and Friday and Saturday dinner. Further afield, the Godmother's in Pahoa (965-0055) is well worth the drive. Turn right at Kea'au and follow the road (and the signs) to Pahoa. The Godmother's Restaurant is a white farmhouse on your left on the far side of town. There is a small parking lot on the 'town' side of the building. Food is excellent, service ditto, staff friendly, it rates four stars in our book. In Hilo we like a funky place called Jimmy's Drive In (which it really is not). It's menu is best described as 'ethnic food of the islands,' keeping in mind the variety of 'ethnics' that inhabit Hawaii. Lots of choices, lots of food, low prices, fast and friendly service. You'll find Jimmy's on Kino'ole street, right across from the newspaper office. Kino'ole is a one-way street and the best way to Jimmy's is to take Kilauea to where it dead ends at Haile Street. Turn left on Haile and left again on Kino'ole. Jimmy's is on the right hand side and there is a parking lot in front. There are lots of excellent restaurants in Hilo, you'll probably make your own discoveries there. We might suggest Pesto, Harrington's (where you can watch the huge, multi-colored Koi swimming in the pool below your window), and the Seaside Restaurant where they raise their own fish for the menu. |
